ARE WE BELIEVERS OR FOOLS?
Andy Rooney when asked if he believed in God, said, “No, of
course I don’t and anyone who tells you that there is a god…. is hallucinating
or not telling the truth.” Andrew Carnegie stated, “I don’t believe in God. My
God is patriotism”. What fools these men were! Oh, not in the sense that they
lacked intelligence, good minds, or were mentally challenged, but that they
denied the existence of God, and Scripture reveals that such thinking is the
hallmark of a fool! “The fool hath said in his (or her) heart, There is no God.”
Psalm 14:1a. These men were, and millions more are, atheistic in belief, fools
by choice!
The fool doesn’t want godly wisdom and instruction, nor does
he want to reverence God. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge:
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7) He has no thought of
God (Psalm 10:4), other than when he is vehemently denying His existence. So,
believing there is NO God, the fool follows his heart, a heart guided by a
counterfeit wisdom; a phony wisdom of confusion, lies, earthly thoughts and evil
deeds. (James 3:14-17) A wisdom that is of Satan; a wisdom that “descendeth not
from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.” (James 3:15) As the fool accepts
this wisdom, his heart, driven by human desires, becomes hardened to truth and
diseased by sin. “The heart is deceitful above all things.” (Jeremiah 17:9), and
”He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool…” (Proverbs 28:26a) But the fool
(unbeliever) would rather rely on his feeble and limited knowledge, then trust
in the Living God! (I Timothy 4:10)
“Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the
wisdom of thy words.” (Proverbs 23:9) Since the fool denies God’s existence he
wars against anything that may spark even a fragment of truth. He doesn’t want
to hear about God’s mercy and grace (Ephesians 2:8), of Jesus’ crucifixion
(Matthew 27), of His resurrection, of everlasting salvation (Titus 3:5-7), of
judgment and eternal damnation (Hebrews 9:27). He vigorously attacks the Bible,
declaring it to be nothing more than lies and contradictions. Because he doesn’t
want to open himself up to the slightest possibility God IS real, he becomes
deaf to wise words.
“It is as sport (a game) to a fool to do mischief
(evil/harm/damage)…” (Proverbs 10:23) As the fool continues to follow his
corrupt heart the more he’ll frolics in sin, and the more he’ll demands freedom
from any distinction of right or wrong. After all, if there is no God the
Bible's teachings are nothing more than silly rhetoric; completely useless.
Therefore, the fool lobbies for abortion, homosexuality, cohabitation outside of
marriage, and fornication (various acts of sexual immorality) to be suitable and
acceptable for all, without exception! As the fool labors to reverse moral
values, other fools applaud as sin is mocked. “Woe unto them that call evil
good, and good evil;” (Isaiah 5:20)
“…the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.” (Proverbs
15:2) Ernest Hemmingway said “All thinking men are atheists.” Thomas Edison
stated, “I have never seen the slightest scientific proof of…….heaven or hell,
or future life for individuals, or of a personal God.” Samuel Clemens (Mark
Twain) declared, “If there is a God he is a malign thug.” What sacrilege! “A
wise man feareth and departeth from evil; but the fool rageth and is confident.”
(Proverbs 14:16) Always ready with an arrogant response to argue against God’s
existence, and to lead others into their damning belief, the fool does his
utmost to eliminate God from the universe, from the minds of the questioning,
and from the realm of being! Lies fall easily from the lips of fools. “Who is a
liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ?” (I John 2:22)
In today’s world most anything is accepted BUT God. His Word
is revised to suit today’s lifestyles, apostasy is slanting, if not destroying,
God’s teachings, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus (God’s Son - John
3:16) are ridiculed, Hell is fictionalized, and eternal punishment is presented
as non-existent. And, by today’s standards, it is the one who believes IN God
that is considered the fool!
Certainly all of us make foolish decisions, but denying God
is beyond foolishness! It is a damning, free will choice with irrevocable,
indescribable and eternal consequences! Unlike the believer who will spend
eternity with the Lord (John 14:2-3), the fool (unbeliever) will forever suffer
in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20:11-15), tormented night and day by a brutal
awareness that Almighty God WAS, IS and ALWAYS WILL BE! “ I am Alpha and Omega,
the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which
is to come…the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)
“Be not deceived: God is not mocked: ….” (Galatians 6:7)
BELIEVE! (John 3:16-18)
